Historical and Genealogy Services

The Smiths Falls Heritage House Museum is home to the Lanark County Genealogical Society (LCGS) Library. The organization has a library of resource materials that can be accessed by researchers with the assistance of museum staff and Lanark County Genealogical Society members. To access the resources, there is a research fee. The fee is $5.00 for a day pass or $25.00 for a Researchers Pass, which allows access for the year.

The Lanark County Genealogical Society holds a variety of research materials in their collection. 

Family Histories
There are over 300 family trees and papers stored in the LCGS “Pedigree” file. If you are looking for a specific name, please contact the museum for further details. 
Property Research 
This combines museum records, maps, photographs and researched LACAC resources.
Census Records 
The complete set of Lanark County Census records are in print from 1851 until 1911; 32 County books of 1871 census “Heads of Household”; early census records from 1814, 1817, 1822, 1837, 1839 and 1842; index to Upper Canada Land Books, Naturalization Records, Assessment Rolls; Voter Lists; Early Landowners, Early Pioneers and a collection of 1851 + census' of surrounding townships.
Cemeteries 
The Lanark County cemetery binders, which are identified by Township. Additional included Townships are: Leeds, Grenville, Carleton, Frontenac, Ottawa, Renfrew, Glengarry, Russell, Dundas and Stormont Counties. The LCGS Library also has access to a large wall map that displays the Lanark County Cemeteries by lot and concession, along with a cemetery location guide booklet.

District and County Marriage Records (1799-1869), Baptism, Strays and Wills.
Newspapers
The Smiths Falls Record News 1868 to 1911 and 1863 to 1877, Perth Courier 1834 to 1869, Bathurst Courier, Lanark, Renfrew, Carp, Arnprior, Almonte, Brockville, Athens, Eganville, Gananoque, Prescott, Bytown Gazette, Lanark Era, Carleton Place and Pembroke Newspapers.
Telephone Directories 
From the area and surrounding towns 1967 to 2020.
The Alice Hughes Collection
Represents her many years of research in the local area.
Veterans 
A large collection of Veteran's information.
General 
Books on local towns and communities, research books, Legion magazines, the Patrick Wohler Scrapbook (with index).

Photo Reproductions

The museum has continued to digitize its collection of historical photographs in order to make the collection more accessible to the public. The collection is available to be viewed by visitors by appointment.

Prints from this collection can also be ordered. Prints are for private use only. If you wish to use our images for publication purposes, please contact the museum.

  • 8 ½ X 11 inches of smaller - $5.00 + HST per print (same price for colour or black & white prints)
  • 11 X 17 inches - $10.00 + HST (same price for colour of black & white prints)
