The Town provides weekly curbside collection for both garbage and recycling through contracted service providers. Garbage is collected by Glenview Iron & Metal (GIM). Collection occurs on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, depending on your collection zone. Recycling is now managed by Miller Waste Systems (MWS) as part of Ontario’s provincial recycling program. Collection days remain the same as before, and materials should be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. daily.

Recycling

Residential

As of January 1, 2026, Miller Waste Systems (MWS) has taken over residential recycling collection in the Town as part of a new provincial recycling program being implemented across Ontario.

This change is the result of Ontario’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program, which transfers responsibility for recycling collection and processing from municipalities to the producers of packaging, paper, and printed products. The goal of the program is to create a more consistent, efficient, and sustainable recycling system province-wide, while reducing municipal costs and improving recycling performance.

What does this mean for residents?

• Recycling collection days and routes will remain the same
• Recycling must continue to be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m.
• Daily collection times may vary, as they will be set by Miller Waste Systems
• Any future changes to accepted materials or collection guidelines will be communicated to residents

While the Town will no longer directly manage residential recycling collection, it will continue to work with the Province and Miller Waste Systems to support a smooth transition.

For all recycling-related questions, missed collections, or service concerns, please contact Miller Waste Systems directly:

📞 1-888-852-2374
📧 area2@millerwaste.ca

Thank you for your cooperation as Ontario transitions to this new provincial recycling program.

Business

As part of the new provincial recycling program, commercial properties are no longer included in the regular municipal curbside service.

To make sure your business recycling continues without interruption, the Town has partnered with Glenview Iron and Metal to collect recycling from all non-eligible locations.

If you’d like to continue recycling at your business, please contact:

Vanessa Bernicky
📧 vbernicky@smithsfalls.ca
📞 613-283-4124 ext. 1147

Key Details:

  • Collection is weekly on Wednesdays
  • Fibres (blue box) and containers (black/yellow box) will continue on a bi-weekly schedule
  • Please have recycling at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on Wednesdays

Swap days

Swap Days are the second weekend of May and the second weekend of August. Swap days provide you with an opportunity to reduce waste by giving away items you no longer need or by going on a treasure hunt to find some new-to-you items.

Mark items in good condition as "FREE" and place them at the backside of the curb or sidewalk starting on Friday and leave them there until Sunday at noon. This allows community members ample time to browse. If there are no takers, please be sure to remove your items from the curb by Sunday at noon. By-law Enforcement will check for the removal of items after the Sunday deadline.

Tire disposal

Residents can contact local tire dealerships to determine if they recycle tires. Businesses that produce tires must provide collection sites across the province for the public.

Yard waste & brush collection

The Town collects brush, leaves and grass clippings (yard waste) twice a year. Collections take place the second week of May and the third week of November. All leaves and grass clippings (yard waste) must be placed in brown compostable paper bags and be free from any garbage. Brush must be neatly bundled with no branches larger than 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter.

Please view the Municipal Calendar for pick up dates.

The Town also operates a Compost Site that you may take yard waste to during open hours.
