Two Days, Three Ways: The Best of Summer in Smiths Falls

Pack your sense of adventure: Smiths Falls is calling.

Can you hear the siren call of long summer days and steamy nights, just made for a daytrip or weekend escape? Summer is calling and Smiths Falls is ready to deliver with a one-night, two-day outdoor escape specially curated just for you.

Smiths Falls is the perfect place to launch any kind of adventure: Located just 40 minutes from Ottawa, this small town sits at the heart of eastern Ontario’s outdoor playground – the midpoint of the Rideau Canal and the crossroads of three major trails.

Whether you're chasing family fun, a romantic stroll by the water, or a choose-your-own-outdoor-adventure, Smiths Falls can be your summer playground.

For Families: Fun-Filled and Kid-Approved

Working with multiple ages, personalities, and interest to plan the perfect getaway can be tough, and there are no second chances when you’re dealing with toddlers. We’ve pulled together a two-day itinerary to beat the heat that everyone in the family will love (yes, everyone). From beach play to trainspotting, Smiths Falls is made for family time.

Day One:

Keeping cool is a must on a hot summer’s day, and Smiths Falls’ reputation as the “heart of the Rideau Canal” makes it the perfect place to do just that.

Play: An old-fashioned beach day is always a fan favourite! Bring your umbrella and picnic blanket and spend the afternoon lazing the day away on the beach at Murphy Park. Watch the boats float past and move through the picturesque Combined Lockstation; take a stroll to watch the nearly 200-year-old locks on this UNESCO World Heritage site operate up close and in person.

Dine: Ice cream is a must for a good beach day, and The Pickled Pig on Beckwith St. N. is a local favourite. For heartier fare, The Vault on Russell St. E. dishes up a mean burger and fries.

Stay: You don’t need to be a kid to be fascinated by all things railroad related. The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario is a railfan’s paradise, and visitors of all ages will enjoy touring the historic railway station and learning more about railway history. When the sun sets, you can even spend the night in a real caboose, lovingly restored to bring luxury to the railroad life.

Day Two:

No one wants a cranky child while on vacation, and after all the sun and sand yesterday you will want to take it easy before your head home today.

Play: There is more water fun in your future today – spend a few hours at the splash pad or rent a canoe or kayak from Smiths Falls Pedal and Paddle and explore the historic Rideau Canal from the water. If the weather is inclement, you can also bowl for strikes at Gratton Bowling Lanes, right downtown.

Dine: Break your fast at Perfect Thyming or Country Diner, both local brunch spots known for good food and mighty portions. Lunch can be found downtown at Matty O’Shea’s– be sure to order their waffle fries, a fan favourite.

Don’t Miss: Plan your visit around Smiths Falls’ most popular events – the Spirit of the Drum Powwow (June 15, 2025), the Railway Museum’s Trainfest (Aug. 9-10, 2025) or Rideau Paddlefest (June 7, 2025). It’s fun for the whole family, Smiths Falls style.
