The Town of Smiths Falls is urging residents to be vigilant, and report acts of vandalism following a noticeable increase in graffiti throughout various public and private properties within the town.
Over the past few weeks, multiple areas such as street right of ways including bridges and street signage, pedestrian tunnel under the railway, parks, community buildings, and privately owned structures have been targeted. “Removing graffiti isn’t just about aesthetics—it costs money, time, and resources that could be better used elsewhere” said Mayor Shawn Pankow. “We take pride in our community, and we’re asking residents to help protect it.”
The Town spends thousands of dollars each year on graffiti removal and property restoration. This is money that could otherwise support community programs, infrastructure improvements, or public services.
To address the issue, the Town is working closely with the Smiths Falls Police Service to monitor affected areas and respond swiftly to reports of vandalism. However, the support of the public is essential. “We are aware of the uptick of graffiti and are working with the Town on all the areas affected. We have 3 minors who have been caught in regards to graffiti being done at businesses in the south area of town who will deal with alternative measures, under the Youth Criminal and Justice Act” said Police Chief Jodi Empey. “We encourage anyone who sees someone deface property to call us immediately.”
Residents are encouraged to:
- Report graffiti and suspicious activity immediately to local police.
- Avoid confronting suspects directly and instead gather descriptive details if safe to do so.
- Remove or cover graffiti on private property as soon as possible to discourage repeat offenses.
By working together, we can send a clear message: vandalism has no place in Smiths Falls. Let’s protect the character and beauty of our community for everyone who lives, works, and visits here.
To report suspicious activity, please contact the Smiths Falls Police Service at 613-283-0357. To report vandalism on Municipal property, please email the Town at info@smithsfalls.ca.
