Town of Smiths Falls to host a community ceremony in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The Town of Smiths Falls would like to invite members of the community to gather for a ceremony in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Members of the public are encouraged to join us on Tuesday, September 30, at 5 PM, in Centennial Park, for the procession to the Healing Circle on Duck Island.

In acknowledgement of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Bandstand at Town Square will be illuminated in orange from September 29 to October 6, and the Every Child Matters flag will be raised at Lower Reach Park.

“As Canadians, we carry a shared moral responsibility to acknowledge the profound and painful history endured by Indigenous peoples in this country. On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we are deeply grateful for the opportunity to come together with Indigenous communities to honor the survivors and reflect on the lasting impacts of residential schools. Our commitment to truth and reconciliation is not limited to a single day—it is a continuous journey rooted in understanding, respect, and meaningful action," said Mayor Shawn Pankow.

Members of the community and guests are asked to gather at Centennial Park on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 5 PM. Participants will then proceed together, walking to Duck Island, where the ceremony will take place, at the Healing Circle. The Healing Circle, installed last year, is a space intended to foster understanding, healing, and connection among all community members.

The ceremony will begin with a Land Acknowledgement and opening remarks from Mayor Shawn Pankow, followed by a heartfelt address from Tim Bisaillon, a member of the Indigenous community who will share his personal experiences as a descendant of residential school survivors.

We encourage everyone to attend this important event as we come together to honor the past, acknowledge the ongoing impacts of residential schools, and commit ourselves to the path of reconciliation.
