Town Celebrates Environmental Milestone at Bellamy Farm Subdivision

The Town of Smiths Falls is pleased to recognize the successful completion of an innovative wetland compensation project within the Bellamy Farm Subdivision, led by Park View Homes Ltd. This milestone reflects a strong commitment to environmental stewardship while supporting thoughtful community growth.

To accommodate the necessary Broadview Avenue West Road upgrade, a portion of the Provincially Significant Wetland (PSW) had to be impacted, which required compensation. Initial compensation approaches in that area presented concerns regarding the loss of an existing mature natural habitat area. In response, Park View Homes worked collaboratively with the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) to champion an alternative, environmentally sensitive solution.

Following extensive discussions and planning with the RVCA Executive Committee, an innovative compensation plan was approved that relocated the new wetland area to a less sensitive grassland and meadow location. This approach helped preserve several hundred mature trees and protect an established natural habitat area in its existing state, while allowing the project to move forward with minimal forest disturbance.

The project also delivers a meaningful new community amenity, including a public walking path connecting Broadview Avenue to the Cataraqui Trail, enhancing access to outdoor recreation and natural spaces for residents. The newly created wetland, designed with native plant species and varied habitat features, contributes to a net ecological gain and supports long-term environmental health.

“This project demonstrates a thoughtful balance between growth and environmental protection,” said Karl Grenke, Manager of Development Services for the Town of Smiths Falls. “Collectively, we are not turning our back on the wetlands, but rather finding innovative ways to protect, enhance, and integrate them into our growing community so they can be appreciated and thrive for generations to come.”

“This was one of the major hurdles for the Bellamy Farm secondary phases, and we are glad we cleared it,” said Ken Shelley, VP of Asset Management for Park View Homes. “Our goal was not just to meet the regulatory requirements, but to bring additional biodiversity to the area, resulting in a net gain for habitat diversity and function. The creation of this new wetland area, alongside our efforts to preserve existing mature habitat and establish a new town trail, is a testament to Park View’s commitment to responsible development.”

The Town recognizes Park View Homes for its dedication to preserving critical habitat and enhancing the natural landscape, contributing to a more sustainable and connected community for current and future residents. To commemorate this environmental milestone, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on May 27 at 11 AM on Doctor Agnes Craine Drive. (see map below for exact location)
