Project Overview

A Heritage Conservation District is a planning process used in Ontario to identify and evaluate areas with cultural heritage value or interest. The study looks at a neighbourhood’s historic buildings, streetscapes, and overall character to determine whether it should be designated as a Heritage Conservation District under the Ontario Heritage Act. The goal is to understand what makes the area special and how those features can be conserved over time. The Town is undertaking this study to help guide future growth and change, protect valued heritage assets, and ensure that development respects the community’s historic character while allowing it to evolve.

Project Overview

The Corporation of the Town of Smiths Falls is constructing a new Public Works Operations Centre to support the long-term operational needs of the municipality. Following significant fire damage to the existing Public Works Garage in February 2025, Councils previous direction to advance to design for a modern and functional replacement facility solidified this project as a priority for the Town. Capital funds were allocated for the construction of the facility during 2026 Capital budget deliberations.

The new Operations Centre will support Public Works services including roads, fleet maintenance, equipment storage, and winter maintenance activities. The facility will also house offices for Engineering and Public Works staff. The facility is intended to improve operational efficiency, workplace safety, and overall service delivery while providing adequate space for staff, equipment, and future growth.

The project includes the construction of a new operations building and associated site works designed to meet the Town’s current and long-term operational requirements.
