Project Overview
The Town of Smiths Falls will be undertaking several road, sidewalk, curb, and asphalt rehabilitation projects throughout the community during the 2026 construction season. The projects identified in this notice are subject to available budget, tender results, and operational requirements. Accordingly, project scope, timing, and implementation may be revised, deferred, or cancelled as circumstances require.
Asphalt, Concrete, Milling and Paving Works (8 Locations)
The contract for the Asphalt, Concrete, Milling and Paving Works has been awarded to D Rock Paving Inc. Construction is scheduled to begin on August 4, 2026. Residents should expect temporary traffic impacts throughout the duration of the work. Advance notice of significant road closures or traffic disruptions will be provided where possible.
Percy Street (Pearl Street to Broadview Avenue)
Works will include full-depth asphalt replacement, grading and compaction to improve drainage, sidewalk and curb improvements, iron adjustments, and accessibility upgrades. New sidewalk depressions complete with Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSIs) will be installed at Ross Street, Bell Avenue, Carol Crescent, and Marsha Drive. Isolated curb, driveway, and sidewalk repairs will also be completed. New speed humps will be installed as part of the project to assist with traffic calming and speed management.
Canal Street (Beckwith Street to Confederation Bridge)
Works will include full-depth asphalt reconstruction, curb and sidewalk installation, catch basin adjustments, accessibility upgrades, and street lighting improvements. The existing traffic island will be removed, and new lighting pole bases and conduit will be installed in preparation for new light standards captured under a different contract.
Aberdeen Avenue (Alfred Street to Davidson Street West)
Works will include curb replacement and associated driveway and roadway reinstatements.
Union Street (Cornelia Street East to Alexander Street – West Side)
New concrete sidewalk construction will be completed on the west side of Union Street, including connections to existing sidewalks. Accessible sidewalk ramps complete with Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSIs) will be installed at Greig Street and Alexander Street. Isolated curb replacements will also be completed.
Ferrara Drive (Abbott Street to Lombard Street)
Works will include replacing existing asphalt sidewalks with new concrete sidewalk, addition of new concrete from Abbott Street to Ferguson Street, and accessibility improvements. New sidewalk depressions will be constructed with Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSIs) at Abbott Street and Ferguson Street.
Old Mill Road (Adjacent to the Former Water Treatment Plant)
Works will include sidewalk reinstatement, grading and compaction, and asphalt roadway reinstatement.
Beckwith Street North (McGill Street to Montague Street)
Works will include pavement preparation, tack coat application, and asphalt overlay of the northbound and southbound traffic lanes.
James Street (Church Street to Gladstone Avenue)
Works will include full-depth asphalt removal, grading and compaction of the road base, and pavement reinstatement.
New Trunk Watermain and Sewer Separation - Phase 1
The contract for the New Trunk Watermain and Sewer Separation – Phase 1 project has been awarded to Ingimundson Construction Ltd. Construction is scheduled to begin on August 4, 2026.
This project includes the construction of a new 400 mm trunk watermain connecting the elevated water storage tank located at 12 Air Care Drive to the existing watermain on Rideau Avenue, the construction of a new 200 mm distribution watermain to service properties on Lorne Street, the construction of a multi-use pathway connecting Air Care Drive to Lorne Street, the full reconstruction of Lorne Street, and sanitary sewer repairs on Rideau Avenue South between Parkland Court and Third Street.
Road closures, lane restrictions, and temporary service interruptions may be required throughout the duration of the project. Advance notice will be provided to affected residents and businesses where possible.
Canal Bridges Rehabilitation Project
The Town of Smiths Falls will be undertaking rehabilitation work on two bridge structures located along Beckwith Street between Jasper Avenue and Chambers Street: the New Lock Bridge over the Rideau Canal navigation channel and the Pedestrian Underpass Bridge located immediately to the south.
The project includes structural rehabilitation of both bridges, roadway milling and paving, intersection improvements at the Brockville Street, Jasper Avenue, Beckwith Street, and Lombard Street intersection, and upgrades to street lighting, electrical systems, and traffic signal infrastructure.
Due to the location of the work on a major arterial roadway, traffic impacts are expected throughout construction. Lane reductions, temporary traffic control measures, and delays should be anticipated. Access for emergency services, local businesses, and residents will be maintained throughout the project whenever possible.
Construction schedules and traffic management details will be communicated to the public as they become available.
