World Refugee Day

WHEREAS World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour the strength and courage of refugees who have been forced to flee their homes. We also acknowledge those who continue to experience internal displacement and are unable to exit their home country to seek safety. This day serves as a profound reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold justice and human rights for all, as we work to achieve peace, dignity and safe communities.

WHEREAS on World Refugee Day, The Town of Smiths Falls recognizes the millions of people around the world who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, genocide, and war.

WHEREAS The Town of Smiths Falls is committed to being a welcoming and inclusive town for refugees who make this town their home. The Town recognizes and values the important contributions refugees make to our communities.

WHEREAS The Town of Smiths Falls encourages all residents to recognize that diversity is our strength and to view this as an opportunity to welcome newcomers to their new home and become part of their settlement experience.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Shawn Pankow, Mayor of the Town of Smiths Falls, do hereby proclaim June 20, 2026, as World Refugee Day in the Town of Smiths Falls.
