National Indigenous Peoples Day

WHEREAS 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day, first proclaimed in 1996, providing an opportunity to reflect on the enduring cultures, histories, contributions and resilience of First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples;

WHEREAS the Town of Smiths Falls recognizes the importance of advancing understanding, respect and meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples through education, relationship-building and the recognition of Indigenous rights, histories and cultures;

WHEREAS National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Indigenous peoples of Canada;and

WHEREAS for generations, many Indigenous Peoples and communities have celebrated their cultures and heritage on or near this day because the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, holds deep spiritual and cultural significance and is a time of renewal, connection and celebration; and

WHEREAS the Town of Smiths Falls is home to a strong Indigenous community and would like to acknowledge their continued contributions; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Shawn Pankow, Mayor of the Town of Smiths Falls, do hereby proclaim June 21, 2026, as National Indigenous Peoples Day in the Town of Smiths Falls and urge Canadians to come together, reflect on and celebrate the unique heritage, traditions, and knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Peoples
