Media Release: 2026 Compost Site Monitoring Results

The Town of Smiths Falls is sharing the results of its 2026 environmental monitoring program for the Town’s Compost Site, with laboratory results confirming that groundwater and surface water monitoring results meet applicable standards and do not indicate impacts from the compost site.

As part of its ongoing environmental monitoring requirements, the Town is mandated by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) to submit an annual report outlining environmental testing results for the compost site.

The Town’s 2026 annual report has recently been submitted to the MECP and is based on a regime of groundwater and surface water sampling and testing. Parameters routinely tested through the monitoring program include various types of hydrocarbons and a series of metals. The Town continues to work closely with the MECP regarding ongoing monitoring requirements.

Residents can continue to have confidence in the safety of Smiths Falls’ municipal drinking water.
The Compost Site monitoring program identified no impacts to groundwater or surface water from historical compost site activities and remains separate from the Town’s comprehensive municipal drinking water monitoring and testing program.

For additional information or questions regarding the monitoring results, please contact Paul McMunn, Director of Public Works & Utilities, at pmcmunn@smithsfalls.ca.
