Welcome to the Smiths Falls Fire Department. The Smiths Falls Fire Department consists of one Fire Chief, one lieutenant – fire prevention, one lieutenant – logistics, three fulltime firefighters and 18 paid-on-call volunteers.

The fire department operates from one fire station located strategically in the centre of town. It is equipped with a full complement of modern, up-to-date vehicles and equipment.

The fire department responds to all types of emergencies, including fire alarms, structural, vehicle and chimney fires, medical assist, ice and water rescue, hazardous material incidents and motor vehicle accidents and is responsible for issuing of Fire Permits and Fire Prevention Education and Inspections.

The Smiths Falls Fire Department also operates the fire dispatch centre, which handles 9-1-1 and other emergency calls for all fire departments within Lanark County, Township of Algonquin Highlands, Municipality of Highlands East, Municipality of St-Charles, and the Municipality of French River.

Meet Our Team

With 36 years of experience as a Fire Services professional and volunteer, Rick Chesebrough is a respected Emergency Management leader with extensive experience overseeing all aspects of Fire Department operations.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Fire Chief is responsible for the overall administration and operation of the Smiths Falls Fire Department, Municipal Emergency Management and Corporate Health and Safety by providing vision, leadership and strategic direction to ensure compliance with legislation.

The Lieutenant - Fire Prevention develops and provides public education with respect to fire safety and fire prevention, evaluates, approves and enforces fire safety plans, as well asconducts inspections and enforces the Ontario Fire Code and other relevant legislation and standards.

The Lieutenant - Training provides leadership and direction in the development, management, implementation and administration of all fire department training programs and volunteer recruitment opportunities within the fire department. The Lieutenant - Training is also responsible for the Fire Department Health and Safety Program.
