SFPS Community Programs and Outreach

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

In 1829, Sir Robert Peel helped to establish the first modern-day police force in London, England. Peel devised nine principles which later became known as Peel’s Principles. Peel’s most influential outlook for policing is exemplified in the principle which claims:

“the police are the public and the public are the police “Peel’s principle illustrates well the philosophy adopted by the members of the Smiths Falls Police Service. As our motto “Community First“ suggests, the members of the Smiths Falls Police service have taken an active interest in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of our community. After all, not only must we work here, we live here as well!

ADOPT-A-SCHOOL

The Adopt-A-School Program is an integral part of the Smiths Falls Police Service efforts to live up to our motto of “Community First”. The program involves having patrol officers visit their assigned schools on every day shift. This enables officers to have positive interactions and connect with the youth in our community. Often officers can address behaviour issues and areas of concerns before they escalate to criminal activity or serious problems for the school and students.

Other services school resource officers provide include but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing safety information to school children and school staff.
  • Conducting or organizing educational assemblies aimed at drug education.
  • Conducting or organizing educational assemblies aimed at eliminating impaired driving.
  • Addressing the policing needs of attending school children or their families.
  • Addressing issues of violence or harassment in their schools.
  • Participating in Lockdown Drills with the school’s Administration.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER “Through Education Comes Prevention.”

Constable Sean Keogan is the Smiths Falls Police Community Service Officer or CSO. The goal of our CSO is to strive to further the Smiths Falls Police Service motto of “Community First” and as such is an integral part in providing top notch community policing.
