Natural Causes Determined in Sudden Death Investigation

On July 7, 2026, the Smiths Falls Police Service received a 9-1-1 call from a boater who discovered a body in the water near the shoreline off Queen Street in Smiths Falls.

Members of the Smiths Falls Police Service, Lanark County Paramedic Service, and Smiths Falls Fire Service responded to the scene. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene and subsequently identified as John Everett, 96, of Smiths Falls.

A post-mortem examination conducted by the Office of the Chief Coroner determined that Mr. Everett's death was the result of a heart attack and was due to natural causes.
