Police Arrest Three in Theft and Fraud Investigation
On April 3, 2026, Smiths Falls Police Service initiated an investigation into the theft of a wallet from a vehicle that had been entered overnight. The victim later discovered suspicious transactions had already been made on their bank account. Through the assistance of security surveillance footage, investigating officers were able to identify 3 suspects.
On April 4, 2026, while on proactive patrol, members of the Smiths Falls Police Service located and arrested one suspect without incident. A 54-year-old Smiths Falls resident, Harry RICHERT, was charged with one count of theft, one count of possession of property obtained by crime, and one count of use of a credit card. The accused was later released from custody on conditions and provided with a future court date.
On April 23, 2026, with the assistance of the OPP R.O.P.E. (Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement) Unit, Jordan WILKINSON, 37, of Smiths Falls, and Tyler PRETTY, 38, of Smiths Falls, were arrested in relation to the same investigation. Both individuals were charged with one count of theft, one count of possession of property obtained by crime, and one count of use of a credit card. PRETTY was additionally charged with one count of failing to comply with their probation order.
PRETTY and WILKINSON were held in custody pending a bail court hearing.
Charge Laid in Shoplift Investigation
On April 13, 2026, members of Smiths Falls Police Service received a report of a theft that had just occurred at a local business. Officers responded promptly and, with the assistance of security surveillance footage, were able to quickly identify the suspect. The individual was located a short distance from the scene and arrested without incident.
As a result of the investigation, 39-year-old Melissa POWERS of Smiths Falls stands charged with one count of theft under $5000. The accused was later released on conditions and a scheduled court date.
IPV Breach Results in Arrest
On April 15, 2026, Smiths Falls Police Service launched an investigation after receiving information suggesting that court ordered conditions may have been breached. The matter involved an individual who is subject to a court order from intimate partner violence related charges. The individual later surrendered to police voluntarily and without incident.
As a result of the investigation, a 49-year-old male from Smiths Falls stands charged with two counts of failing to comply with their bail release order. The accused was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.
Arrest Made in Fraud Investigation
On April 21, 2026, the Smiths Falls Police Service received information regarding an attempted fraud involving the municipality’s insurance provider. An investigation was initiated, and a suspect was quickly identified. The individual later agreed to surrender to police without further incident.
As a result of the investigation, 38-year-old Brian STINSON of Perth stands charged with one count of making false statement in writing. The accused was later released from custody with conditions and a scheduled court date.
Charge laid for shoplifting
On April 22, 2026, the Smiths Falls Police Service responded to a report from a local business after loss prevention staff detained an individual for shoplifting. Officers attended the scene and commenced an investigation into the incident.
As a result of the investigation, 32-year-old Ryan WARREN of Ottawa stands charged with one count of theft under $5000. The accused was later released from custody with a scheduled court date.
Wanted Subject Arrested
On April 22, 2026, Smiths Falls Police Service, with the assistance of the OPP Frontenac County Detachment, located and arrested an individual wanted on an outstanding warrant. The accused was sought for failing to attend court in March 2025 in relation to charges of possession of property obtained by crime.
A 34-year-old male, Kevin HEIM of Inverary, was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.
Downtown Patrol Results in Arrest Related to IPV Investigation
On April 22, 2026, while on proactive patrol in the downtown core, a member of the Smiths Falls Police Service observed an wanted suspect. The individual was arrested roadside without incident. The suspect was wanted in connection with an intimate partner violence investigation initiated on April 20, 2026.
As a result of the investigation, a 50-year-old Smiths Falls resident was charged with one count of assault, one count of forcible confinement, two counts of failing to comply with their bail release order, and four counts of failing to comply with their probation order. The accused was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.
The charges in these matters have not been proven in court.
