Transformational Waterfront Development Concept Revealed
Smiths Falls Town Council received a presentation last evening from Bruce Linton and Travis Grimes from Canopy Growth Corporation where they revealed their concept for redevelopment of the former water treatment plant on Old Mill Road on the Town’s beautiful waterfront. Mr. Linton was granted exclusive rights to negotiate the redevelopment of the former industrial property following a public request for proposals (RFP) process in 2018. The buildings and property have been vacant for almost a decade. Canopy Growth has signaled its intention to make a considerable investment in Smiths Falls downtown to breathe new life into a once thriving and architecturally significant set of connected buildings along the waterfront. The proposal includes an office complex for over 220 employees, a boutique hotel, a convention centre, restaurant and outdoor space that will open up and highlight the falls and link to the downtown core. A set of concept drawings were provided to illustrate the scope and scale of the proposed buildings (see attachment). The first step in bringing the concept to life is for Canopy Growth and the Town to examine potential alterations to the street network in the vicinity of the property to provide sufficient space for the proposed uses. Canopy Growth will then refine their proposal and begin the planning approvals process.
The newly redeveloped downtown anchor complex could be open as early as mid 2022.
