Smiths Falls receives $98,178 for detailed design of Phase 2 for Beckwith Street Revitalization

The Town of Smiths Falls is pleased to announce its application for funding under the 2020-21 Connecting Links Program has been approved.

The Connecting Links Program provides funding to build a safer and more reliable transportation system in order to keep goods moving and better connect communities across the province. In 2020, 24 municipalities received a total of $30 million to repair roads and bridges through the 2020-21 Connecting Links program.

“We are pleased with this latest funding announcement from the province of Ontario regarding the Connecting Links Program,” said Shawn Pankow, Mayor of the Town of Smiths Falls. “Ensuring critical highways and transportation hubs like those in Smiths Falls are maintained is important now more than ever, and we’re pleased to see the province’s confidence in the second phase of the generational revitalization of Beckwith Street.”

In July 2019, the Town received funding in the amount of $2.1 million to fund Phase 1 of the Beckwith Street Revitalization. In November 2019, Smiths Falls’ Council gave their support to submit the Detailed Design of Beckwith Street (Russell Street to Elmsley Street) for funding support.

An application in the amount of $109,087 was subsequently submitted, and Smiths Falls received the full allowable allocation of 90 per cent of project costs, in the amount of $98,178.

Funding for the detailed design of Phase 2 of the Beckwith Street Revitalization will include designs for drainage, road works, lighting, and traffic signals from Russell Street to Elmsley Street. Once the design work is completed the Town will be in a position to accurately forecast Phase 2 project costs.

“This new funding announcement is an indication of the support this project has had at the provincial level and will position the Town to apply for Phase 2 construction funding in the next program intake,” Pankow said. “As a complete street model, the Beckwith Street Revitalization project will improve access and pedestrian and traffic flows throughout the downtown. We’re excited to move on to the next phase for the project.”
