Town of Smiths Falls receives $3,666,500 funding for the new water tower project

The Town submitted an application for funding in September of 2021 in an effort to offset part of the $8.5M budget for the new Smiths Falls water tower project. The grant is a joint federal, provincial and recipient partnership.

“The replacement of Smiths Falls’ water tower is an exciting project for the community, and it has been a long time coming,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow. “As Smiths Falls continues to grow, so do our water needs. The increased capacity of the new tower will ensure we are able to support increased demand for water now and in the future. Thank you to our federal and provincial funding partners for working with us to identify the needs of citizens and delivering resources.”

The new water tower will be located on Air Care Drive, the preferred site emerging from an exhaustive study of options conducted in 2018. The tower is expected to hold up to five times the volume of the current tower, which will address the water storage capacity deficit and meet the recommendations set out by the province’s Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP).

“This funding could not come at a better time. Our water tower is approximately 100 years old and is requiring more and more maintenance as it ages,” said Paul McMunn, Director of Public Works and Utilities. “This funding will assist us in managing the cost associated with the new tower and save tax dollars of the citizens in Smiths Falls”.
