Smiths Falls enters into recreation cost sharing agreement with five neighbouring municipalities

The Town of Smiths Falls is pleased to report a five-year recreation cost sharing agreement entered into with five municipal partners to provide access to the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre and Youth Arena. This agreement will be in effect from Jan. 1, 2022 until Dec. 31, 2026.

The neighbouring municipalities of Drummond/North Elmsley, Elizabethtown-Kitley, Montague, Rideau Lakes, and the Village of Merrickville-Wolford will be partnering with the Town of Smiths Falls through this agreement.

“We are very pleased to be entering into this shared service relationship with our partner municipal councils,” said Shawn Pankow, Mayor for the Town of Smiths Falls. “We see this opportunity for our partners to provide unfettered access to the Town’s great recreational space as one that will provide long-term health benefits, while redistributing the economic impact for all.”

On Monday, the Town of Smiths Falls ratified  the five-year recreation cost sharing agreement with neighbouring municipalities for access to the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre and Youth Arena between Jan. 1, 2022 and Dec. 31, 2026. The agreement is based on a weighted assessment cost-sharing model to distribute net facility costs equitably among the partners based on proximity to the facility.

A previous cost sharing agreement entered into between Smiths Falls and four neighbouring municipalities of Drummond/North Elmsley, Elizabethtown-Kitley, Montague, and Rideau Lakes expired on Dec. 31, 2021.

The Village of Merrickville-Wolford will be a new partner with the Town of Smiths Falls cost sharing agreement, a decision that Smiths Falls’ Council enthusiastically welcomes.

“We wish to express sincere thanks to our municipal neighbours for recognizing the merits of this partnership agreement and the value a regional approach brings to our collective populations,” said Pankow.

The Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre is scheduled to reopen to visitors on Jan. 31, 2022.
