Smiths Falls announces return of Canada Day house decorating contest
The Town of Smiths Falls is pleased to announce Canada Day celebrations will feature the return of the popular Canada Day house decorating contest.
The house decorating contest was first launched in 2020 as an alternative way to celebrate Canada Day while conforming with health restrictions, and the event was an unqualified success, seeing more than 20 participating locations in Smiths Falls.
“We’re excited to announce the return of this fun contest in Smiths Falls. It’s the perfect way to celebrate our nation while respecting physical distancing recommendations,” said Art Manhire, Director of Community Services. “We encourage everyone in Smiths Falls to register and decorate their home or business and then tour the other locations for a fun, Canada Day, self-guided house tour.”
To take part in the event, households or businesses are encouraged to unleash their patriotic spirit and decorate their front façade with a Canada Day theme. On July 1, a map featuring all the participating destinations will be released to the public via Speak Up Smiths Falls, Facebook, and local media. The public is invited to tour participating locations in Smiths Falls and cast their votes for their favourites through Speak Up Smiths Falls.
Registration as a contest location opens June 18 and closes June 25. Interested parties can register by 4:30 p.m. on June 25 by completing the form found on Speak Up Smiths Falls at www.speakupsmithsfalls.com/canada-day-2021 and uploading a photo of their decorated location to that platform before July 1.
Participants can also register by emailing email@example.com. If registering by email, please provide your address and indicate whether or not the location is a business or residence. Participants who register via email must also email a photo of their location before July 1.
Voting will take place on July 1 through the Speak Up Smiths Falls website at www.speakupsmithsfalls.com and a map will be distributed through social media at that time.
Prizes for the contest will be awarded in the amount of $100 per category for following categories: Best Overall; First Runner Up; Kid’s Choice; Most Creative; and Eco-Friendly. Prizing will consist of Downtown Dollars from the Smiths Falls Downtown Business Association.
This project is developed by the Town of Smiths Falls in cooperation with the Downtown Business Association as an alternative to the traditional annual Canada Day celebrations, which are cancelled for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
