NOTICE OF PROJECT INITIATION

TOWN OF SMITHS FALLS
Schedule ‘B’ Municipal Class Environmental Assessment
POTABLE WATER STORAGE

The Town of Smiths Falls (the Town) is initiating a planning process to assess alternative potable water storage solutions for the Town (referenced herein as Potable Water Storage). Currently, the Towns potable water system provides water to a population of approximately 8,980 people within the Town and the Atironto Subdivision (Township of Montague). The serviced population is comprised of 2,390 residential accounts and 296 commercial/industrial/institutional accounts, and 350 people in the Atironto Subdivision. Reviews of the Official Plan have resulted in a need to consider infrastructure upgrades in order to continuing to serving the community as it grows over the next 20 years and beyond.

The Town’s existing drinking water supply system consists of a water treatment plant, an elevated potable water storage tank, and a distribution system. The most recent water storage tank inspection suggests the structure is in fair condition, but requires a number of upgrades to address structural, coating and safety deficiencies. As such, various alternatives will be assessed throughout the Class EA process.

As part of the Municipal Environmental Assessment (Class EA) process for reviewing the Potable Water Storage, public comment during the evaluation of alternative solutions will be requested. The Town is planning to conduct one public information session during the course of the study. Notice of the session will be provided in advance. Project information will also be available to the public at the Town office and the Town website, www.smithsfalls.ca.

We are interested in hearing any comments or concerns that you may have about this project. A public database of comments will be maintained and, with the exception of personal information, included in the study documentation that will be made available for public review. Parties interested in providing input or that wish to obtain additional information at this stage of the study are asked to submit comments in writing to:
