CONSTRUCTION UPDATES – SMITHS FALLS

The Town of Smiths Falls 2017 Public Works program is steadily moving ahead with major investments advancing in local roads, bridges and buried infrastructure.

The Beckwith Street – Stone Arch Bridge deck work has been completed despite the challenges of a record wet spring and summer.   Ottawa Greenbelt is currently working on the excavation and installation of a new storm water treatment unit and outfall at the Chambers Street intersection.  The  project will also include the drilling and installation of a new outfall pipe from Chambers Street down to the Rideau River.   In road activities  are expected to be completed on or before August 15th, 2017.    A separate construction crew will be installing the new timber stairwell down at the river edge in early August after the main roadworks are completed.  The Stone Arch Bridge Project is being completed with the support of 100% funding obtained under the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund and the Federal Gas Tax program.

The initial stages of rehabilitating William Street have been completed between Highway 43 and Abbott Street.    These asphalt patching and padding works are part of the initial works required to prepare the street for a double micro-surface treatment which will restore the road by sealing the road over the stretch (similar to recent work on Highway 43).   Miller Paving Limited will be mobilizing to complete the final surface treatment late August/early September weather permitting.

Construction works are now advancing on Lorne Street with the assistance of over $799,000 in funding support from Federal and Provincial Governments.   Clarence McDonald Excavating will be replacing buried water and sewer services on Lorne Street between Queen Street and the VIA Rail Corridor and will be completing much needed road and sidewalk improvements on this street.  Constructions works will be proceeding over the balance of summer with completion targeted for October 31st.

At the other end of William Street, Town crews will be replacing key water and sewer services on the block of Beckwith to Market in preparations for the new overlay work.   Thomas Cavanagh Construction Ltd will be mobilizing in mid August to advance with the replacement of the  asphalt surface along with upgrades to the concrete sidewalks in the block.   Affected owners will be contacted directly with more information.
