Lanark County Genealogical Society Reference Library

On March 27, 1981, twenty-four genealogy enthusiasts met near Smiths Falls Ont., to discuss the formation of a local genealogy society. This group grew in scope and number to become the Lanark County Genealogical Society in 1982. In 20 years the membership has grown to over 350 in Canada, United States, Great Britain, Australia. The mandate of the Lanark County Genealogical Society is to assist members in researching family histories and in the gathering, recording and preserving of genealogical information pertaining to Lanark County. The LCGS is an independent group, yet maintains close ties with the Kingston, Ottawa and Leeds & Grenville branches of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

Published works which have been completed by the collective and individual efforts on the part of our members are listed on the website along with other publications related to Lanark County which are available from other sources. Also the Kingston and Ottawa branches of the Ontario Genealogical Society have published many of the cemeteries, census and church records of Lanark County. A list of these is also provided on the website (see Published works).

The LCGS normally meets at 8 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month with the exceptions of no meeting in January, afternoon meetings on the first Saturdays of February and March. The meetings are held at different locations througout Lanark County in an effort to accommodate all members of our group, as well as giving our members a chance to access and familiarize themselves with the various museums, libraries and institutions within our County. See the current meeting schedule for locations. The majority of these meetings feature guest speakers, on a variety of topics, which can include doing genealogical research, history of Lanark County, family histories, the availability of research materials, and a whole lot more.
