Arts and Culture
Arts and Culture is at the center of life in Sensational Smiths Falls. With
a mix of highly creative residents, arts and culture is well established in the community. Smiths Falls is home to the Smiths Falls Community Theatre, a first class venue for the theatre and arts community created through the renovation and redevelopment of the Victoria Avenue Railway Station. Many juried artisans have made Smiths Falls their home and the community is working aggressively to develop and enhance the Town's creative capacity. Fresh ideas are welcome as are creative arts entrepreneurs who position themselves on the cutting edge.
The Rideau Canal, designated by UNESCO as Ontario's only World Heritage Site, offers an attractive scenic backdrop for creativity and runs through the community at its mid-point between Ottawa and Kingston. Just a one-hour drive from Ottawa and the Canada/US border, Smiths Falls is well positioned to meet the needs of the creative population in surroundings that provide limitless opportunities for all ages in a safe and secure setting. Smiths Falls Council established its Arts and Culture Task Force during the winter of 2010 to work towards the establishment of a formally incorporated Arts and Culture Council. The Smiths Falls & District Arts and Culture Council (SFDACC) was incorporated in early 2011 and established its first Board of Directors at its inaugural meeting held April 20. The board is headed by President Louis Tremblay, the former Chairperson of the Arts & Culture Task Force.
Formed with the help of the Economic Development Department of Smiths Falls, the SFDACC is now an arm's length organization, which will continue to help grow arts and culture in Smiths Falls and district.
Even when times are challenging, the Arts & Culture Council can accomplish much more when members focus and bring together their imagination, skills and memories.
The purpose of the SFDACC is to provide services, resources and opportunities for individuals and groups so they may pursue and create artistic and cultural endeavours; to help with the public exhibition of local artistic and and cultural expression, and to educate the community about the positive contributions, which result from this expression.
